How often should I do the bucket test on my pool?

This is a good question! One would think that most people would be familiar with the water level in their pools but varying factors like auto fills or the pool man filling the pool up weekly without them noticing happens a lot too..

First find out if the pool guy is filling up the pool weekly or if an auto fill device is attached to the pool. Both of these are import to know when monitoring the water levels in ones back yard. It could be possible one only goes into the backyard on weekends after the pool guy has been to the house during the week and filled the pool. If either of these instances is occurring discontinue both for at least one week seasonally to do a proper bucket test to know for sure if you have a leak! Auto fill devices are very convenient but can be very bad for the health of ones pool if it has a leak. Even a small leak will cause the pool auto fill to constantly be on and dilute the good chemicals that keep the pool healthy to swim in and not turn green. The pool guy filling it up is typically just good service but will also mask the severity of any current leaks.. typically if the pool guy is doing this too often the customer will hear about it because they will also have to add more chemicals and spend more time to keep everything balanced in the system.

What do we recommend? We recommend to not have auto fills.. sorry.. we have seen them waste so much water over the years and that is not good. Are we so busy we can’t add water to our pools ? or have our pool guys do it and let us know if a leak exists. Yes an auto fill is easy but leaks are so common in pools and even a small leak will waste a whole bunch of water when an auto fill is attached..we do not feel them to be justified to use especially when water costs so much and the drought we have been in here in Southern California .
